Thesis - Vehicle on-board wireless communication study
We are Geely Technology Europe. A unified European R&D centre within Geely Auto Group, where world-class engineers, developers and innovators push the boundaries of intelligent mobility. Our mission is to shape the next generation of vehicle architectures, digital technologies and intelligent systems for global markets. We integrate European customer and regulatory requirements early in the development process and support multiple brands within the Geely portfolio, including Zeekr, Lynk & Co and Geely. With nearly two decades of engineering experience in Europe, we continue to build smart, sustainable and user‑centric mobility solutions.
Project Description:
In the couple of past year there was a trend toward increasing the number of the electrical units in the vehicle. Lots of technology like CAN, LIN, Ethernet and FlexRay have been used to achieve a proper communication based on the scenarios. However, the centralized architecture have integrated lots of the components in several instances like Zone Controller and Core Computer, still there are many sensors and minor devices communicate with each other using legacy communication mediums. This introduces extra weight and engineering effort to the project.
Deploying wireless communication technologies offers a viable solution to these challenges. However, despite the maturity of wireless solutions, their adoption in In-Vehicle Networks (IVNs) remains limited due to harsh electromagnetic environments, stringent safety protocols, and strict time-sensitive communication constraints. A preliminary screening of available market technologies including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Classic Bluetooth, NFC, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) highlights IEEE 802.15.4 UWB as a promising candidate that satisfies the necessary reliability and timing performance criteria.
Scope: During this thesis work these point should be included:
Standard Analysis: General study of the IEEE 802.15.4 concept, configuration parameters, and behavior under varying setup conditions.
Comparative Evaluation: Benchmarking IEEE 802.15.4 against competing candidate technologies.
Simulation & EM Analysis: Simulating prospective deployment scenarios to evaluate the impact of electromagnetic (EM) interference on communication quality
Your skills and background
Ongoing MSc degree in electronic, embedded, AI or any other similar programs.
Interested in the IVN technology.
Strong knowledge in the programming languages like C/C++.
Motivated and goal oriented with a good communication skills.
Previous experience with OMNeT++ and INET is a high plus but not a must.
